FAQ

How long have you been performing professionally?

Desert Gypsies was formed in 2010, and began their professional career in 2012. Since then, Desert Gypsies have performed at dozens of venues and for a wide variety of audiences.

Although we are a family troupe, we are professional performers. We prefer to visit a new site before performing to ensure the best possible show. We arrive early to performances, are friendly, warm, and caring, and we strive to share the joy of music and dance to every audience.

What kind of dancing do you do?

Our dance is grounded in Middle Eastern music and movements. We also incorporate Spanish Gypsy, flamenco, and Mediterranean music, dance, and costuming in our repertoire. Our performances can evoke the pyramids and pharaohs of ancient Egypt, the glitter and sparkle of cabaret belly dance, the romance of the Mediterranean, or bring to life the passionate spirit of Spanish Gypsies.

Because we have this versatility, we've developed shows for events as varied as birthdays, Cinco de Mayo, Mardi Gras, Father's Day, Halloween, and Christmas. (Check out our photo gallery for pictures.) We're happy to work with you to help you develop just the right show for your occasion and location!

What kinds of shows do you perform?

Our audiences include senior living centers, community centers, community events, elementary schools, churches, and similar locations. We are happy to consider your location, but because Desert Gypsies is a family troupe, we cannot perform at adult-only venues or events.

I'm an activity director at a senior living residence. What kind of show do you usually do for my audience?

As you can see in our Galleries, Desert Gypsies truly enjoys dancing for, and interacting with, their senior audiences! What many activity directors feel works best for their audiences is a 45-minute dance show, followed by 15 minutes of interacting one-on-one with the audience.

This show length seems to be just right for most audiences; it gives us enough time to showcase both our group dances and our individual dancers, without overwhelming audiences. The after-show time gives us an opportunity to answer questions, share experiences (many of our audience members were raised in, or have visited, the countries we represent in our dance), and if desired, take pictures with audience members.

Of course, if you prefer another format for your performance, we're happy to work with you to provide just the right show for your location. Just click on the "Contact Us" tab, and we'll get started!

I need a show that incorporates lots of audience participation. What can you do for me?

We love this kind of show! What we usually do is alternate between performing and interacting with the audience by bringing them up to dance with us, giving them noisemakers, etc. For many audiences, two 15-minute performances, broken up with a 15-minute interactive component, and followed by 15 minutes after the second performance for conversation and pictures, works beautifully. Click on the "Contact Us" tab and we'll work together to develop just the right show for your audience!

You're just the entertainment I'm looking for! When are you available?

Our troupe members are homeschooled, so our schedule is flexible. If we're not already booked for a performance, 10 AM - 3 PM on weekdays is generally open. We have previous commitments Monday-Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons, but are available for shows Thursday-Sunday evenings.

Again, our schedule is flexible, so if you need a show at 1 PM on Tuesday, or at 2 PM on Sunday, please call, text, or e-mail. On most days, if we're not already booked, we can accommodate you!
